Signs My Car's Water Pump Has Gone Bad
Your car needs a healthy water pump to circulate the coolant through the engine. If there is no circulation, the engine will overheat. We will talk about this in greater detail below. If you suspect your water pump is going bad, pop the hood and take a look at it. Also, take into account the pump's age. If it is older than 10 years old, it may have reached the end of its life span.
Corroded Water Pump
The reason why we suggest you look at the water pump is that it needs to be replaced if it is corroded. Corrosion on the pump is a sign that the pump is leaking slowly. The fluid that it is leaking is the engine coolant. Unfortunately, the corrosion will eat away at the pump and take a small leak and turn it into a large leak. Consequently, you will end up with...
Leaking Engine Coolant
You may back out of your garage one day and see a puddle of engine coolant on the garage floor. This is a sign that the water pump has a severe leak caused by the corrosion discussed above. In order to avoid a larger coolant leak, replace the water pump at the first sign of corrosion. This ensures the corrosion does not have time to eat through the pump and cause a larger leak.
Poor Coolant Circulation
As we mentioned in the introduction to this blog post, the water pump circulates the engine coolant. If there is a problem with coolant circulation, it's only natural to assume that the issue is the water pump. In some cases, the pump may reduce the pressure under which it circulates the coolant or it may fail to circulate the coolant at all. The latter is extremely problematic.
Growling/Whining Noises
The water pump may also start to growl or whine if it is going bad. Unfortunately, there is no way to stop these noises except to replace the water pump. If the pump is growling, there is an issue with its internal mechanisms. If the pump is whining, there's an issue with the serpentine belt.
Overheating Constantly
Finally, a faulty water pump will make your vehicle overheat all the time. This is especially true if it can no longer circulate the coolant through the engine. Unfortunately, you cannot drive your automobile if the engine is overheating because you can damage the engine severely.Call our shop today if you are having problems with your vehicle's water pump.
